Real:
Connecting with lost friends and digging out contacts - great value! I love Linked In!
Wasting time on useless updates and counter-updates - take control!
Collaboration and very targeted communities - huge value add here, but I wouldn't really call it social networking! A must for every organization!
Huge volume of digital information - but can we make sense of it?
Hype:
Business value - very few will really make money from it! Too many players commoditizing the offerings, and ad values go down with increased availability
Social intelligence - most of the information may end up being incorrect if it is unregulated, even Wikipedia is now enforcing curbs
Value of information - Fake identities, how do you know it's not a fake Twitter?

This seems "the" current pet peeve. There is a whole bunch of social networking sites, and although I like the idea that some of the sites offer means to connect with long lost friends, there does not seem to be too much dept in what these sites offer. Kind of the "fast food" of socialization. New sites cropping up, and people moving on to them (like grazing on fresh pasture :-)) offers little comfort to those who like things steady - Am I feeling a lot older and outdated than I really am? :-) I guess there is one more classification by which the world is now divided: those who are e-socialize-happy and those who aren't.
Agree with the comment as well as the post except I feel there is lot of business value to this new found way of connecting. If one looks at the entire economics which is affected by a social networking site, I am sure one could sence its business potential.
I my openion is a very well thought and structured platform which combines business owners (ex. linkedIn), advertisters (resume makers on LinkedIn), customers (people who want jobs), general users (people wanting to make contacts), companies- HR posting positions (wanting to hire people), communities (some topic/ tech related groups), application builders (presentations on LinkedIn) where each entity of this platform makes money/ gains business directly or indirectly.
Actually, I have a good idea on how to make money through social networking, but of course, I cannot discuss it here :)
